Cyber Security Talk at East Hampton Library with Columbia University Lecturer Joseph Steinberg
The following is the announcement made by the East Hampton, New York, library:
Joseph Steinberg, author of “CyberSecurity for Dummies,” and a Columbia University lecturer on the subject, will be presenting an opportunity for library members to hear a highly informative talk about the most essential things you need to know about cybersecurity.
We all know that we face increased threats from costly hacker attacks and data breaches – unfortunately, however, much of what we have been taught about how to protect ourselves is simply wrong.
In this session, Steinberg will show you how you can improve your odds of staying cybersecure, no matter your level of technological sophistication. He will also discuss some of the newer ways that cybercriminals are using Artificial Intelligence for illicit purposes — and what that means for you.
In addition, Steinberg will discuss recent events and explore how various government attempts to protect consumers have proven counterproductive – worsening our collective cybersecurity posture instead of improving it – and how governments can better keep us safe from cybercriminals.
Please join us to learn how to protect ourselves better against cybercriminals…
Wednesday, October 22nd, at 6 PM

About the speaker: Joseph Steinberg serves as a cybersecurity-focused expert witness, board member, and advisor to businesses and governments around the world. He has led organizations within the cybersecurity industry for over 25 years, and has written books ranging from the best-selling Cybersecurity for Dummies to the official study guide from which many CISOs study for certification exams in advanced information security management. Known for offering keen insights and unique perspectives on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), and the potential impacts of technological developments on human society, Steinberg amassed millions of readers as a regular columnist for Inc. Magazine and Forbes. Today, his independent column, appropriately titled Joseph Steinberg: Totally Candid, receives millions of monthly views, making it one of the most-read columns focusing on cybersecurity and related matters. Analysts have calculated that he is among the top three cybersecurity influencers worldwide. Steinberg has helped many organizations improve their management of cyber risk, and has assisted attorneys in achieving just compensation for parties wrongly harmed by cyberattacks. His opinions are frequently cited in books, law journals, security publications, and general interest periodicals; his cybersecurity-related inventions appear in over 500 U.S. patent filings. He remains one of only a few dozen people worldwide to hold the suite of advanced information security certifications (CISSP, ISSAP, ISSMP and CSSLP) — indicative of the both deep and broad nature of his cybersecurity expertise and experience. In addition to his primary work, Steinberg serves as a senior policy analyst at the Global Foundation for Cyber Studies and Research think tank, a member of Newsweek’s Expert Forum, a member of the Computer Crime & Digital Evidence Committee of The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), and a board member at several business and nonprofit organizations. He previously served on — and was unanimously elected chairman of — a governmental financial advisory board, and served as a member of the Cybersecurity Council at CompTIA (the world’s largest technology trade association and its second-largest related certifying body). Steinberg co-founded and served in multiple capacities (including tenures as CISO, CEO, and chairman of the board) at the cybersecurity firms Green Armor Solutions and SecureMySocial. Earlier, he served in several senior capacities at Whale Communications, which was acquired by Microsoft.
